KPB MI-LK / Thomas Bensch

"The traffic accident trend for 2023 is characterized by

  • "a slight increase in accidents with personal injury,
  • a roughly constant number of accidents with property damage and the total number of registered accidents,
  • a decrease in traffic fatalities and
  • an increase in hit-and-run accidents with property damage",

said Councillor Ali Doğan at the beginning of the announcement of the new annual figures. The head of the authority continued: "Our statistics clearly show that people have been traveling more since 2021. Due to the higher volume of traffic, we have seen a steady increase in the number of accidents since then. However, we are still well below the figures from before the pandemic."

Total number of road accidents in MI-LK

  • Increase in the district in 2023 by 63 to 8,360 accidents. Although this is an increase on the previous year, it is significantly lower than the figures for 2018 (9,487) and 2019 (8,768).
  • We maintained the previous year's level of property damage accidents. We now recorded 7,250 accidents. That is 22 more accidents in this category than in 2022.

Injury accidents

In 2023, a total of 1,110 accidents with injuries occurred on our roads. This is an increase of 41 people affected compared to the previous year (2022: 1,069). Expressed in percentage points, this represents an increase of 3.84.

In this context, Department Head of Police Mathias Schmidt reported that the majority of accidents were single-vehicle accidents, which are difficult to classify into typical accident categories.

Hit-and-run accidents

The head of the Traffic Directorate, Dirk Klöpper, reported "a significant increase in this area of crime". The senior police officer also appealed for information from witnesses. "The police are dependent on information from the public. Even the smallest tip-off can help the investigators to track down the perpetrators in the investigation".

  • In the past year, 89 cases of hit-and-run accidents with personal injury were reported. This is 8 fewer cases than in the previous year.
  • In the case of hit-and-run accidents with property damage, the number of reports recorded (2023: 1,727) rose significantly compared to the previous year (2022: 1,498), with an increase of 229.
